Japan Airlines and American Airlines have dropped the price of their flights from Toronto to Osaka, Japan down to between $639 and $689 CAD roundtrip including taxes.
The flights have 2 stops each way, usually in a U.S. city (Chicago) and Tokyo. Overall, it's about 5 hours of extra travel time (each way) versus the fastest flights from Toronto to Osaka.
Note that Osaka has 2 airports. Some flights are in and out of Osaka's Itami (ITM) airport. With other flights, you fly into ITM, but come home from KIX.
From Osaka, it's a 26 minute train ride ($17) to the beautiful city of Kyoto if you use the special rapid trains on the JR Kyoto Line.
Japan Airlines is a very good airline (5 star rating with Skytrax).

1. Start with a Google Flights search like this one:
Google Flights: Toronto to Osaka, Japan
- Click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view and browse for cheap date combinations.
- Look for the dates that are between $673 and $706 roundtrip.
- You may find on Google Flights that you get to a 'dead end' where you can't actually book the flight for the price shown. What you need to do is...
2. Go to Skyscanner or Kayak
- search for a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Osaka, Japan (OSA)
- use the same dates you found on Google Flights.
- TIP: For these flights, it can be worth trying both Skyscanner and Kayak, as sometimes one will have cheap flights that the other doesn't.

Tips for booking these flights
- Be sure to avoid any flights that have an airport change, which require you to get from one Tokyo airport to the other when making your connection. You do *not* want those flights.
After your Skyscanner search completes, they make it pretty obvious when a flight has an airport change...
- If you can't find any flights without airport changes, you may want to try slightly different dates, which can help.
- Note that with some flights you fly into Osaka's KIX airport, but fly home from Osaka's ITM airport ...
- The fastest flights have about 20 hours of total travel time (including layovers) each way.
