"I'm a travel junkie who's hooked on deals from YYZ." - Chris Myden

And so it begins. Iceland opens tomorrow without restrictions, to all vaccinated travellers.

Iceland

Iceland has announced that as of tomorrow, all vaccinated travellers, regardless of origin, will be allowed to visit without any restrictions.

Iceland is not technically the first country to announce something like this, but is arguably the first ultra-popular tourist destination to enact it. (The other countries currently allowing vaccinated travellers without restrictions from all origins are The Seychelles, Georgia, and Estonia).

Travellers need to show one of the following:

certificate of full vaccination against COVID

*OR*

certificate of previous COVID infection

Of course, here in Canada, the vast majority of us do not even have our first vaccination shot yet, nevermind being fully vaccinated.

Iceland is asking the the certificate of vaccination to contain the following info:

Passport number
The vaccine name
The batch lot and number
The date(s) of vaccination

From what I've seen here in Canada, the piece of paper you receive as proof of vaccination certainly won't have your passport number on it. It remains to be seen whether Iceland will relax the rules on this.

Travellers who can provide proof of a previous COVID-19 infection will also be allowed to enter freely.

But taking a look at the official rules for proof of a previous infection, it needs to be: "documented results from a laboratory within the EEA/EFTA-area". Which means from within Europe, not likely to be the case for Canadians.

Icelandair has been scheduling non-stop flights from Toronto (YYZ) to Reykjavik (KEF) throughout the pandemic, but have not actually flown any. Currently they are scheduled to restart on May 2nd. I think it's highly unlikely they will actually resume by then. Air Canada no longer has their flights to KEF on their schedule at all.

Canadians need to have a clear idea of what the restrictions will be for the vaccinated when they arrive back in Canada before booking anything. So far, the federal government has not given any indication of what we will be doing with vaccinated travellers.
