Toronto to Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne, Australia - $791 to $807 CAD roundtrip

Koala in Australia

Qantas has once again dropped the price of their flights from Toronto to cities in Australia, this time down to between $791 and $807 CAD roundtrip including taxes.

You can also turn these into 2-in-1 trips and visit both Australia and San Francisco (or Los Angeles), for about the same price (instructions below).

You can also look at flying into one Australian city, but home from another, for about the same price (instructions below).

You can also find flights from Toronto to a few other places in Australia (Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Coolangatta / Gold Coast) for a lot less than their usual price (instructions below).

Update 12/1 - Some 'over Christmas' flights from Toronto to Sydney, Australia are available for $847 to $877 CAD roundtrip if you can depart by December 16th. See update at bottom of blog post.

Availability for travel

December 2018

January (very limited), February, March, April, May, June, August, October 2019

(but it varies by city)

How to find and book this deal

1. Try a Google Flights search like this one...

Google Flights: Toronto to Sydney, Australia (SYD)
^^^ look for the dates that are $894 roundtrip in February, March, April, May, June, August (very limited)

Google Flights: Toronto to Brisbane, Australia (BNE)
^^^ look for the dates that are $892 roundtrip in April, May, August (very limited)

Google Flights: Toronto to Melbourne, Australia (MEL)
^^^ look for the dates that are $878 roundtrip in January (very limited), February, March, April (very limited), May (very limited), August (very limited), October

- click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view and browse for cheap date combinations

- look for the dates that are somewhere between $878 and $894 roundtrip.

2. Go to Skyscanner or Flighthub or Kayak

- search for a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to...

Sydney (SYD)

- use the same dates you found on Google Flights

- the price on Skyscanner or Flighthub will usually be around $75 to $150 cheaper than what you see on Google Flights.

You can also turn these into 2-in-1 trips, and visit both Australia *and* San Francisco, for a similar price

1. First, try finding a normal roundtrip flight to Australia, using the Google Flights links above.

For example, let's say you found a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Sydney (SYD), from Apr 17 to Apr 30.

2. Now go to Flighthub or Kayak

- Change the search type from 'Roundtrip' to 'Multi City'

3. Search for a flight like this one:

Toronto (YYZ) to Sydney (SYD)
Sydney (SYD) to San Francisco (SFO)
San Francisco (SFO) to Toronto (YYZ)

- For the first and last legs of the journey, use the dates from the normal roundtrip flight that you found on Google Flights.

- You can play around with the middle date to give yourself more or less time in Sydney vs San Francisco.

For example, here is a screenshot from Flighthub of Apr 17 to Apr 24 to Apr 30.

You can also try Los Angeles instead of San Francisco.

You can also look at flying into one Australian city, but home from another, and keeping the price the same

Brisbane (BNE) to Toronto (YYZ)

- Try the dates from the normal roundtrip flight that you found on Google Flights.

For example, here is a screenshot from Flighthub of Apr 9 to Apr 24.

You'll notice the flight from Sydney (SYD) to Brisbane (BNE) is not included.

You can try a multi-city search on Flighthub that includes the flight between the two Australian cities. It may only bump up the price by a little bit.

For example:

Toronto (YYZ) to Sydney (SYD)
Sydney (SYD) to Brisbane (BNE)
Brisbane (BNE) to Toronto (YYZ)

It's even possible to visit multiple cities in Australia *and* Los Angeles and still keep the price under $875!

1. Go to Flighthub or Kayak

2. Change the search type from 'Roundtrip' to 'Multi City'

Try a search like this one:

Toronto (YYZ) to Sydney (SYD)
Sydney (SYD) to Brisbane (BNE)
Brisbane (BNE) to Los Angeles (LAX)
Los Angeles (LAX) to Toronto (YYZ)

You can also try San Francisco instead of Los Angeles.

example: Apr 17 to Apr 23 to Apr Apr 27 to Apr 30

Hi Chris thanks for the info. Question, for dates Mar 6 to Mar 18 on flight hub I see the price $656.73 inc tax and fees but when I go to pay the price increases to $911.76 - various taxes and fees have now been included. Is this correct, just not sure why the $656 price say taxes and fees included?? Thanks agian

    Hi Peter,

I'm seeing $807 CAD roundtrip including taxes when I search for those dates. And the price stays the same when I go to the payment info page.

I'm not sure how you managed to get $656 on the initial screen. Are some of the passengers children?

One thing I can think of is that if some of the passengers are children, the displayed price might be cheaper initially, since it's giving you an average of all the ticket prices, and the child tickets might be a bit cheaper.

But then perhaps when you go to check out, the system finds that there aren't actually enough of the cheaper tickets available for the number of passengers requested, and the overall average price jumps up to be higher than $807 per person.

When I tried your dates for the screenshots above, it worked for 2 adults.

Thanks for the reply Chris. Our flights were for two adults and 1 infant on lap; as you suggest that's possibly the reason the final price was higher. We also had to pay $170 for our seat selection there and back, I gather it's now normal practice to charge for seat selection this early, the other option was to book the seats within 24hrs of departure for free but didnt want to take the chance of getting split up with a baby.

Appreciate all your work and thanks again for the reply. Cheers

Hi, Chris. I was looking to head to go from Toronto to Adelaide to Sydney and back to Toronto, but everything is over 3k for that route. Do you have any suggestions on how I should be looking? Thanks.
