One way flights from Toronto to Europe - $89 CAD including taxes (or is it $236?)

Europe

WOW Air is showing some one way flights from Toronto to Europe for $89 CAD including taxes.

The actual cost of the 'flight only' is $89 CAD including taxes, but WOW Air has recently changed their baggage fee structure (yet again!), and you really need to do some math before deciding if it's a good deal.

With the 'flight only' price of $89, you can bring 1 personal item, up to a maximum of 42x 32 x 25 cm (10 kg or 22lbs).

However, to bring a piece of carry-on, is $64 CAD each way.

And to bring a piece of checked luggage is $90 CAD each way.

So if you really want to compare fairly against other airlines, this one way price should *really* be thought of as being $89 + $64 + $90 CAD, or $243 CAD.

WOW Air has also recently introduced 3 'levels' of fares...

WOW Basic - flight only
WOW Plus - flight + personal item + carry-on + checked baggage
WOW Biz - the above plus a meal and more legroom

The WOW Plus prices are really the prices you should be looking at when comparing against other airlines.

On a lot of these $89 flights you'll notice the WOW Plus prices are around $236 CAD.

If you're someone that can travel lightly, with only a personal item and a carry-on bag, it would be $89 + $64, or $153 CAD, which is still a pretty amazing one way price to Europe.

But be sure to do the math before being sucked in by WOW Air's attractive looking prices.

All of WOW Air's flights connect in Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF) before heading to mainland Europe.

But what about getting home?

That's the rub. The WOW Air flights coming back from Europe are not as cheap. It may be possible to find a cheaper one way flight with another airline.

Below I'll list some of the cheapest options I've seen for one way flights coming back home from Europe.

If you are able to pair it with one of the really cheap one way flights *to* Europe on WOW Air, you may be able to get yourself to Europe and back for a really low price.

You can click on the destination for a Google Flights search.

This nonsense of advertising a super cheap fare then loading all kinds of surcharges on it is deceptive and misleading. I would never fly WOW for that reason alone.

    1) is there a weight limit on 1 personal item, up to a maximum of 42x 32 x 25 cm ?

    2) what is the cheapest way for return?

    Hi Chris,

Did Wowair ever have this level of promotion in August?

What is the best we can expect from Wowair for August round trip based on your understanding of their past years deals?

    Thank you very much!

You fail to mention up front one key piece of information. None of the flights are direct since WOW is an Iceland airline so you must go through Reykjavík-Keflavík Airport first, both ways.

I looked at the Frankfurt deal and it's a 1.5 hour layover in Iceland. not horrible, but yes it's a stop. Maybe a good time to get food as you won't get any on the plane and you'll likely have already eaten the meal you brought in your 1 personal item. lol

Actually, as I see it, the WOW Basic does allow for what is essentially a laptop case for free. Considering that my mobile phone and case completely replaces a laptop, a camera, a wallet and a phone (or all in a phone)...all in my jacket pocket, a laptop case is a fair bit of room to pack some fresh underwear, toiletry, a snack for the flight and maybe even a change of clothes.

Ted: 10kg (22lbs) is the weight limit for the personal item. I've added some of the cheapest one way flight options home from Europe to the blog post.

Steve: Back in November of 2015, WOW Air offered flights from Toronto to London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, or Dublin for June, July, and August travel.

The prices worked out to around $400 CAD roundtirip, but that was for 'flight only'. The real prices with luggage were probably around $550 CAD.

Quite a few June and September dates were available. Very few in July. Some in late August to early September.

Overall, July and August will be the last months of the year that WOW Air wants to offer crazy prices to Europe, just like other airlines. Although they did offer some pretty amazing prices for August travel to Iceland, back in the fall of last year.

Steve: Thank you, I have added that info to the post.

These are all likely to disappear (go up in price) pretty quickly, as they start to sell out of the $89 fares. The dates in the blog post are the dates that were available when the alert was sent out.

    Thanks Chris. Love the website!

Everyone in my office was in a frenzie this afternoon after you posted it. I'm going to Copenhagen for 4 days in June. 339$ all in round trip. Just going to bring a small backpack with 4 changes of clothes to fit within the "personal item guidelines". Slutty tank tops don't take up that much room ;). It's cheaper Toronto --> copenhagen. Than Toronto --> NYC. Just have to read the fine print!

    Thanks again !!!

Hey Chris, I've just booked a flight to London with the deal you posted. Thank you. However, now I'm freaking out about the return flight, as even the cheapest one's are quite pricy. Any prediction if the return flights will get cheaper especially for the month of June?

    Has CoffeeAndCream been here?
       CoffeeAndCream on February 17th, 2017

Hira, I don't think it will get any cheaper than current prices offered by TAP or WestJet.

June is too close, so I don't think price will go lower than they are now for any airline. Additionally is a a start of high season (summer) in Europe, when flights are the most expensive and they mostly fill up quickly.

In the worst case scenario is a loss of $89 if you decide not to fly or flights back will be too expensive.

But for all of us another lesson from airline industry- WOW developed new tactics for bait and hook- cheap flights there, expensive back home. We just have to hope that some European airline will start to practice it as well and we will be able to buy a cheap flight from there to here...

    Has James A been here?
       James A on February 22nd, 2017

It appears that the surcharges for baggage are for each flight segment and not the whole trip, i.e. flying to London one way counts as 2 flights, YYZ-KEF and KEF-LGW.

    Has Aneta been here?
       Aneta on February 22nd, 2017

    Hi Chris,

I am looking for flights late Sept to early October with flexible city arrival and departure into Europe. Do you think I should buy this Wow deal now or hold off for a better deal. At this point the $89 deals are gone for my feasible dates it would be ~$300 each way with carry on baggage?

    Thanks!
    Aneta
